The May edition of Disney's Mickey Monitor, annual passholder newsletter, confirmed that the name of the new summer fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom will simply be "Nightastic!" According to the newsletter, the show's storyline will follow Captain Hook and his crew attacking Cinderella Castle before being chased off by the Fairy Godmother and Tinkerbell. Sounds somewhat "Pirate and Princess"-ey if you ask me. Anywho, there's going to be perimeter fireworks with it, so it's all good.
I'll be making a trip to the Magic Kingdom on June 7 to check it out. I should have a review up here on the site pretty quickly afterwards.
I'll also be checking out Star Wars Weekends, so you can expect plenty of Twitter updates about that. Just like my last trip, I may even include a few special "live ratings" for you guys who follow me.
I'm not leaving until June 3, so expect my usual semi-regular updates until then.

Talking Mickey Mouse Debuts
Did anyone have any idea that they were working on this?
This is all kinds of cool: a TALKING walk around character. This is simply amazing and if that video doesn't give you goosebumps, you're on the wrong blog.
I'll have more on this in the next News From Around The World.
As an aside, this is my 200th post here on the site in a little under a year. It's been a blast. Thanks to everyone who's been along for the ride.

Get Out The Vote!!
Hey everyone! Fantasmic is getting slaughtered in the finals of the Theme Park Insider Best Attraction Tournament. We need Disney to represent and at least make it a respectable loss.
By the way, no way is The Voyage the best ride in America, that's lunacy. It's good but it's not that good.
How about getting out the vote for Fantasmic right here!!

Best Theme Park Attraction Tournament
What's your favorite theme park attraction? What's the best? Theme Park Insider has been trying to answer these questions for the past week or so, with their Best Theme Park Attraction Tournament. It's down to the Sweet 16 and you should definitely check it out if you get a chance.
Things are split up into category specific brackets. In the roller coaster bracket, it's two from Busch Gardens Williamsburg facing off, Apollo's Chariot vs. Griffon, and a really tough battle between Cedar Point's beloved but over-rated Millenium Force and Holiday World's crazy Voyage.
There is strong Disney representation throughout the rest of the tournament.
In the awkwardly titled Best Movie or Animated Show Bracket, it's Philharmagic vs. Disneyland's Tiki Room, and Terminator 2: 3D vs. It's Tough to Be aBug.
In the Best Live Show Bracket, it's Festival of the Lion King vs. the criminally under-seeded Lights, Motors, Action; and on the other side Fantasmic vs. Finding Nemo the Musical.
And over in the Best Themed Ride Bracket, it's Tower of Terror vs. Haunted Mansion, and Spider Man vs. Pirates of the Caribbean.
In my opinion, it's going to be highway robbery if Fantasmic doesn't take the whole thing. I could easily see whichever roller coaster comes out of that bracket (unless it's Griffon, which it won't be) making a strong showing, but most likely it's going to be whichever ride comes out of the themed ride bracket.
No matter which one you're pulling for, let's try to get the vote out for Disney. The tournament continues right now at Theme Park Insider.

June 18
Mark your calendars, Harry Potter fans. It looks like that's the official opening date for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
I assume by now everyone has read the tantalizing details Universal released in their press packet today. I have full coverage of it coming in Monday's News From Around the World.
In my opinion, it's kind of a catch-22 for Universal. The stuff they have planned seems pretty amazing so, on one hand, they've pretty much got a guaranteed ****+ and incredibly popular attraction in their pocket. They're going to draw in huge crowds for at least the next two years. The problem is going to be, first if they can actually convince those people to come back for another vacation, which is going to be an issue because even though Harry Potter land might equal or, to some people, surpass Disney, basically everything else they have comes up short. And you could argue that the even bigger problem is that they've built an entire park around a movie and book franchise that, while incredibly popular right now, is over with. There's no room to expand because all the books are finished. And even if they remain popular for years to come, where do you go with the land? Nowhere. Once the big fans of today visit it, which pretty much all of them will in the next five years, there's no reason for them to want to come back because there's nowhere else to go with the land.
For now though, Universal has the biggest draw in Orlando and will remain this way for the next three or four years until the new Fantasyland opens.

Some Links I've Been Forgetting to Post...
The Orlando Sentinel has Wizrding World of Harry Potter pictures here and here.
DizneyMike at All Ears Net has pictures of the pizzeria being constructed in Italy at World Showcase. This is long overdue: both an expansion of SOMETHING in World Showcase and GOOD pizza at Disney World.
In other restaurant news, it's just what Disney needed: another Latino restaurant! All Ears Net has info.
In a move that only makes perfect sense (so it's surprising, I know) dinner at Cinerella's Royal Table will now be a full princess character experience, instead of just meeting some of the royal family at the door. The Daily Disney has info.

Tragedy at SeaWorld
The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that a trainer was killed earlier today during a performance of Believe, the killer whale show, at SeaWorld Orlando. According to reports, one of the whales lept from the tank and grabbed the trainer by the waist and began "thrashing her around." The stadium was evacuated as medical personnel tended to the victim.
Trainer Dawn Brancheau was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Orlando Attractions Magazine, Screamscape, and Jaunted have updates on the incident.
A Twitterer named SapphicKitty was in the audience and managed to snap this picture as the show began. (Note: It's not of anything graphic. Just one of the whales before the show.)
An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. Based on the nature of the story I doubt many more details are going to be forthcoming. It's a wild animal with "killer" in its name. Sadly these things are bound to happen from time to time.
Nevertheless, our thoughts and prayers are with the trainer, her friends and family, and the entire SeaWorld and Blackstone family.

Exciting news and I had no idea something this big was coming tonight.

Space Mountain Reopens
Space Mountain finally reopened yesterday. It only opened for a brief period before shutting down due to "technically difficulties." They didn't change the ride so how on Earth there were technically difficulties so soon, I have no clue, but that's what happened.
Orlando Attractions Magazine and WDW Magic have coverage.
Reports indicate that the ride has reopened today and will probably continue with periodical soft openings throughout the week to come.

Disney Dream Announcement
Disney Cruise Line released details on their new ship, the Dream, set to launch in 2011. All Ears Net has coverage. Highlights include a ROLLER COASTER, a "nightlife district" (new home of the Adventurer's Club? I doubt it but how sweet would that be?) and more of the usual stuff: kid and teen areas, the usual art deco design, and Palo again.
Don't get me wrong, I love Disney (obviously) and these ships look nice enough but they've yet to do anything that makes me feel like I really NEED to take a Disney cruise. Sure the water coaster is enticing and I would certainly consider a 3 or 4 night Bahamas sailing if the price was right but it's just not something on the top of my "to do" list.

Busch Entertainment Sold
In a move expected by industry insiders, the Blackstone Group announced today their purchase of Busch Entertainment including Busch Gardens and SeaWorld. The deal will keep the "Busch" name in the park's title and their beer in the park's taps. Gone, however, will be the famous Clydesdale horses.

Reports: "4 for 7" Deal Announcement Coming Soon
TouringPlans.com is reporting that the Walt Disney World "Buy 4, Get 7" deal is not only coming back but available for booking right now. This would indicate that an official announcement is coming sooner rather than later, most likely before the week is up.
The deal, which was first offered roughly a year ago, is available for guests who book a weeklong Magic Your Way package at a Disney resort from November 1 to December 24, 2009 and January 3 to March 27, 2010. Value resort guests pay for 5 nights and get 2 free while moderate and deluxe guests pay for 4 nights and get 3 free.

BREAKING NEWS: Bus Service Suspended
This is breaking news at the moment.
The Disney Blog and the Orlando Sentinel are reporting that Walt Disney World bus service was suspended due to a suspicious package found underneath a bus. Reports indicate this bus is not in a guest area and the service has been stopped as a precaution.
Reports now indicate that this device has been removed however Disney is checking all buses individually to make sure there is not another threat. As a result, hours at Animal Kingdom and the water parks have been extended since guests are stranded there.
Buses that are cleared to return to duty are being marked with a "white dot."

Universal Responds: Wizarding World of Harry Potter Announcement
John Frost at the Disney Blog has a full update on today's Universal announcement on the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Highlights include:
I should also not that I'm not a Harry Potter fan and I've never read the books nor seen the movies so I have no idea what I'm talking about with this stuff. It all seems pretty cool for people who are big time into the books but I'm a little worried that this stuff is being made so "inside" for the fans that people who aren't, like me, are going to be completely confused by everything.
Time will tell.
Highlights include:
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey "robocoaster" that will be the headlining attraction and best new ride of the year winner for 2010 for sure. Universal promises it will be unlike anything ever created before. It's going to have to be great because it's being set up with Spider Man level hype.
- Dueling Dragons will be rethemed as Dragon Challenge and will be based on the Tri-Wizarding Tournament.
- Flight of the Unicorn will be rethemed as Flight of the Hippogriff.
- There will be three restaurants, a number of stores, and a working post office.

Imagineering Press Conference at D23 CONFIRMS Star Tours 2 and Fantasyland Expansion
This news is breaking at the minute.
At the D23 Expo in Anaheim today, Disney Imagineers confirmed two huge Disney World rumors.
1. A new reimagined Star Tours attraction will open at Hollywood Studios (and Disneyland) in 2011. The film will be in 3D and will include (but not be limited to) the pod racing scene from The Phantom Menace, as long rumored.
2. And I'll begin eating my hat on this one. The Fantasyland expansion, reported here earlier this summer, has been at least somewhat confirmed. Mickey's Toontown Fair will close to make way for princess and fairy themed areas. The concept art looks amazing (see the below Orlando Attractions Magazine link) as they plan to fully theme the areas to look like the settings from the movies. Though it should be noted that there was an audible groan from the audience when it was mentioned that the expansion was to include "more of your favorite princesses."
Confirmed for the expansion:
5. Casey Jr. might come to Magic Kingdom in some way. This is neither confirmed nor denied but the Imagineers said they have considered it.
Orlando Attractions magazine has great video up of the Fantasyland announcement.
We'll be updating this page as the news comes in. Follow us on Twitter for breaking news retweets from our followers at the expo.
Special thanks to Deb Wills from All Ears Net, Stitch Kingdom, and Orlando Attractions Magazine for their minute by minute tweets of the imagineering press conference. We couldn't have done this update without you guys. You're the best!

- Little Mermaid attraction!! Can't believe they're actually doing it.
- Beauty and the Beast restaurant and Gaston's Tavern.
- Dumbo expansion including the rumored "dual" attraction and the elimination of the queue (!!) and in its place a circus themed play area. It seems to be something along the lines of a really big pre-show area where maybe everyone gets something like a Fastpass to ride with.
- Sleeping Beauty meet and greet, themed as a birthday party.
- Cinderella and stepsisters meet and greet including some type of "knight training" for the boys.

WDW Magic has some photos of the ongoing Skyway demolition, here and here.
Hilariously, they come with a random "WARNING - graphic photos" tag (and the even more hilarious "WARNING - STILL graphic photos.") So I suppose if you're easily offended by pictures of rubble and construction equipment you should avoid the above links.
