I just read an interesting commentary from Toonzone's Ed Liu regarding what he feels are the big problems with Disney's recent animated features, in particular "The Princess & The Frog." He brings up some interesting points and I agree that there doesn't seem to be one big problem that needs to be addressed but rather a bunch of smaller ones that, added up over the years, are now resulting in disappointing box office returns even for good movies.
I definitely agree that putting "princess" right there in the title had to have scared off some boys. I also think that the extremely strong performance of Avatar had to have hurt it a little with those same boys. It's totally baffling to me, however, that a seemingly wretched movie like "Alvin & The Chimpmunks: The Squequal" managed to do so much better than it.
This is a point that I've been making for awhile but I think one big problem with Disney's newer films is the style of animation. No, I don't mean the switch from traditional to CG back to traditional. I mean the style of drawing the characters. I don't know if there is a technical term for the shift or even an exact impetus for the switch but, trust me, it's there. In many of the older films, especially the extremely popular early 90's stuff like "Beauty & The Beast," "Aladdin," and "The Lion King" that I remember growing up with, the characters were always smoothly drawn and appeared, for lack of a better term, "realistic." (And yeah, I know that they really aren't too realistic with the giant eyes and such. But they just seem more "Disney real" if that makes sense.) Then sometime in the late 90's there was a shift to drawing with much harder edges and absurdly exaggerated features. And this wasn't just at Disney, I've noticed it in many of the cartoons I see on television today. I don't know if it's an attempt to look more like anime or what but it's one of those things that's always bugged me.
Take a look at these two screenshots from later Disney films: This one from "Tarzan" and This one from "The Princess & The Frog."
Then look at these two from the 90's golden age: This one from "Aladdin" and This one from "Beauty & The Beast."
Notice the difference in the animation? The difference in the character's shape and edges. Doesn't the first set seem a little...off? Perhaps its just my bias as someone who grew up during the time of the second set and to kids from today maybe those two are the ones that seem wrong.
It's not like I'm saying this is the reason for the film doing so poorly. But what I am saying is that if Disney really wants to remind people of the times when they made good films then they need to do more than just go back to the princess storytelling template: they should go back to drawing the films the same way as well. Maybe then they'll erase the stigma that the disastrous end of the Eisner era created.
Then again, maybe it's the old Disney park curse. Films where the attraction opens in the parks before the movie opens in theaters always do below expectations. No idea why. It's just a bizarre coincidence/fact of Disney life.
Read the article and see what you think: Part 1 and Part 2.
I wrote a paper on the decline of traditional animation for a class way back in 2004. I should dig that up and see how it relates to this discussion.

Steve Huettel of TampaBay.com has an article on Mike Steuben of TravelingSense.com on life as a "passenger of size."
I recently stumbled upon a great blog called "Stuff From The Park." It describes itself as "a collection of images and other items from Disneyland, theme parks, and other amusement parks." Check it out if you've got the time.
Stacy at The Disney Blog has a look at the new Holiday Inn Resort (we had coverage in News From Around the World earlier in the week.)
Disney actually put up a pretty hilarious video on their members only website. It was linked in the "March Disney Hello" e-mail that's usually filled with nothing but fluff and outdated news. "Timmy Tours the Magic Kingdom" is a "stroller's eye view" of a baby's first trip to the Magic Kingdom and it's hilarious. The thing with the flower beds and "look at the hamster's from G-Force" had me LOL'ing. Check it out of you're on the mailing list.
Theme Park Insider is doing their annual Best Theme Park Attraction tournament. If you haven't been checking it out, you should (if you're into that sort of thing.)
If you've got a blog that you think we should be looking at or saw a great Disney story that you'd like to share with the world, drop us an e-mail, tweet us, or reply in the comments!

Some old stuff I've been meaning to post forever:
Let's start things off on a depressing note. Remember River Country? Apparently Disney doesn't. Tri-circle-D at DISboards has a whole bunch of amazing pictures of the park in its current destroyed and overgrown state. I have some bad news for you guys: it's never reopening.
Chris Beale has a great editorial up at Orlando Attractions on the closure of Pleasure Island. I have to admit, I had high hopes for what I thought Disney would do with the location. The result has been, let's say "not so favorable" to say the least.
Everything Walt Disney World has a review of Touring Plans' Lines app. I'm not going to lie, this is part of the reason I bought a Droid.
If I'm ever incredibly rich, I'll be making sure to have an event like this one, reported on at The Disney Food Blog.
Finally, John Frost at the Disney Blog notes an interesting milestone in Disney history.

The Disney Parks Blog has tips on decorating your home for Christmas the Disney way! Included are tips for trees and outdoor displays.
Two of my favorite blogs, The Disney Food Blog and Touring Plans, team up for some tips on dining at the World. This is especially important for those of you visiting for the holidays.
My Disney Mania talks discount shopping in their latest post (also check out the always fun coverage of their latest trip to the World.)
In one of the greatest things I've read in forever, Chuck Boutwell from Big Fun on the Bayou attempts to settle once and for all the question of "what is Goofy?" I think his theories require further examination because of Chip and Dale. Perhaps they are not as far along in the evolutionary process as Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy? The fact that I'm even considering this is proof that I've gone partially insane.
Finally this week, Theme Park Insider is going to be the impetus for me spending my upcoming vacation making lists of things. First Robert Niles presents his list of the most overrated theme park attractions, followed by a list of the most underrated. And then, just to really give me work to do, he makes his case for Impressions of France as the best theme park movie ever. We'll see about that!

Really slow week on the blogs. I guess everyone is still feeling that lingering tryptophan coma.
Disney historian Paul F. Anderson has started up a new blog called Disney History Institute and it's pretty excellent.
DizneyMike at All Ears Net has a review of the new Holiday DLights Tour.
The Disney Food Blog has a review of one of the most popular dining experiences at Walt Disney World: Chef Mickey's character breakfast. They include a picture of the dinner menu and, my lord, every one of those items sounds delicious!
The Disney Parks Blog has some Christmas fun facts on Main Street USA.
That's it for this week. See you next time!

Jack Spence from All Ears Net has a full report on the beginning of Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.
The Disney Food Blog has a great post on Thanksgiving at Walt Disney World.
Daveland stumbled upon some vintage photos of Walt touring Disneyland's Frontierland in the late 1950's! I love that picture of the "spaceman" at the end. It reminds me of the Honeymooners episode where Ed Norton dresses like a Captain Video space ranger.
Listicles has a list of the 22 least successful incarnations of Mickey.
The Disney Chick really made me chuckle with a list of "10 Signs You're A Disney Dork." #8 made me laugh outloud because I always do this. Even worse, I often check them out just for the heck of it even when I'm not planning a trip. "Hmm...I wonder what I'd order at Citrico's tonight." And I don't do #10 personally but I notice it all the time on other blogs and it occasionally bothers me. Just sayin'.
The Disney Blog has information on how you can help Disney imagineering legend Bill Justice celebrate his 96th birthday. Bill is having a tough time these days and this is a great way to give back. I'll be sending something for sure.

The Disney Parks Blog has some information on Space Mountain (we have more in the Refurbishment Report tomorrow.) One cool thing is that the story seems to tie in much better with the overall Tomorrowland theme than it did before, so that's nice.
Dustin Curtis has a post on a recent flight where he happened to sit next to the guy who designed the ambient music for Walt Disney World. It's a really interesting read.
The Disney Parks Blog has coverage of the Christmas Parade tapings over the weekend.
DISUnplugged has a great interview with Andrew Zimmern. Besides being one of my favorite Travel Channel personalities, Andrew makes a point about Disney World that I agree with 100%, it's the last paragraph down the bottom (but read the whole interview because it's really good.)
Robert Niles at Theme Park Insider has "a parents' guide to encouraging your kids to ride roller coasters."
The Disney Food Blog has a review of San Angel Inn. This is an incredibly polarizing restaurant at Epcot and I'm going to have to sample it myself sooner than later to finally be able to weigh in.
Lastly, I hope everyone with the day off has a restful and reflective Veteran's Day. Well wishes sent out especially to current and former men and women of the armed forces, in particular those who are stationed around the globe protecting our freedom. Thank you.

(Note: The big news of the day is on the impending announcement of a Disney park in Shanghai. I'll have much more on this later in the day.)
Deb Wills of All Ears Net has an interview with Joe Lanzisero, Imagineering Senior Vice President, who oversaw the Imagineering team for the Disney Dream. Meanwhile, Laughing Place Magazine's "Art of Telling Tales" blog has about as many pictures from the Dream as you're going to find anywhere (most of which I've not seen anywhere else.)
The Disney Parks Blog has a post on the Food & Wine Festival.
The Disney Food Blog has a great review of Paradiso 37 as well as a nice post on Disney's advances in food purchasing technology.
"Donald" from My Disney Mania has an update on his trip to the D23 Expo.
Touring Plans has the second part in their excellent blog series on Walt Disney World bathrooms. How can you not love this?
In maybe my favorite post of the week, Meet the World discusses the World of Motion and notes where a number of the animatronics have found new homes! Never knew this.
5 Kingdoms has a post comparing the Refreshment Corner/Casey's Corner at the Disney parks. I'm digging the sweet staircase in Tokyo.
Robert Niles at Theme Park Insider gave me a chuckle with this post.
Finally, ZapperZ at My Disney Mania has a nice update on buying a new house.

The Disney Food Blog has a post on dining alone at Walt Disney World.
Get in the Halloween spirit with an Orlando Attractions Magazine photo gallery of Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.
We close things out with another look at The Disney Food Blog. This time with a post about Port Orleans' beignets. Because really why not?

Quick look around the blogs this morning...
Jack Spence from All Ears Net (who's quickly becoming one of my favorite Disney bloggers) has an absolutely excellent entry this week on one of Animal Kingdom's most overlooked attractions: the Maharajah Jungle Trek.
Speaking of Animal Kingdom, The Disney Food Blog has a review of the Picnic in the Park.
Also on The Disney Food Blog is an article on Halloween treats from around the World.
Theme Park Insider has an interview with travel writer Christopher Elliot on Orlando International Airport.
Finally, Passport to Dreams has a great article looking at the Fantasyland expansion.

Jack Spence at All Ears Net has a nice article on the history of fan favorite attraction the Tomorrowland Transit Authority.
The always excellent Robert Niles at Theme Park Insider has a blog today on a particularly bad Florida thunderstorm during his Tom Sawyer Island days.
The Disney Food Blog has a great post on the new La Cava del Tequila at Epcot's Mexico pavilion.
Finally, Digital Jedi at Re-Imagineering has a great article that hits somewhat close to home with this site. The article is about critisism of Disney on blogs and message boards and why this critisism exists. I consider myself more of a "reviewer" than a critic, since I think "critic" has a negative connotation to it. But yeah, this applies to me, probably applies to you if you're reading this, and definitely applies to a lot of people out there.
If you have any blogs you think we should take a look at or have any questions, comments, or anything else to contribute to Walt Disney World Traveler, don't hesitate to send us an e-mail.

Sorry for the lack of updates last week. I was in Ocean City, MD and couldn't get Blogger to work from my phone. However, those of you who follow us on Twitter got to get some late breaking news and live ride reviews from the boardwalk. If you don't already follow us, you should definitely consider it.
Now, on with the show...
Matt Palm from the Orlando Sentinel remembers Walter Cronkite and his contributions to Disney.
Debra Martin Koma of All Ears Net has an interview with Marianne Hunnel, manager of culinary programs for the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival.
Dewayne Bevil of the Orlando Sentinel has some comments on the alleged Fantasyland construction plans that leaked last week. Let me just say that I have plenty of qualms with them and that'll be a post for another time.
Robert Niles at Theme Park Insider has a "Weird Al" inspired cast member story on the art of the spiel.
The Disney Food Blog does my job for me, with a roundup of Disney food related articles from the past week.

Zapper Z at My Disney Mania has a post on discounts at Walt Disney World.
Ever wonder the difference between Jungle Juice and Frunch? The Disney Food Blog tries to clear things up.
Have you ever been to MyDisneyBlog.com? Occasionally Tomorrowland cast member John, AKA CrazyDisneyDancer, checks in with a recap of what he did during his day at work. It's a pretty enlightening look into the life of a cast member and the ways in which he really enjoys his job. Check it out sometime.
